Spud Shooters

Spud Shooters is my 3D first-person shooter about angry armed potatoes, and it runs straight in your browser with nothing to install. You drop into The Mash Pit, an enclosed arena of cover blocks and corner bunkers, and fight AI potato-troopers across five game modes. Start with the Mash-ine Gun, run over glowing pads to swap to a shotgun, a scoped sniper, or a rocket launcher, cook grenades for the corners, and outscore everyone before the clock hits zero.

🥔 About Spud Shooters

I wanted an arena shooter that loads instantly and gets you fragging in seconds, so I built Spud Shooters on WebGL with no accounts, downloads, or launcher screens. The whole thing is one cast of cartoon potato-troopers — you, and a handful of bots named after real potato varieties like Russet, Yukon, Idaho, Fingerling, Kennebec, and Pontiac. When one of them mashes you, they even fire off a taunt in the kill feed.

The projectiles here are visible tracers that actually travel through the air, not instant hitscan lasers. That means shots are dodgeable: strafe behind a pillar and a sniper round sails past, or juke sideways and a rocket detonates on the wall where you used to be. It changes how every fight plays out — position and movement matter as much as your aim.

Before a match you pick your mode, the number of opponents (2, 4, or 6), and a difficulty tier — Cadet, Soldier, or Veteran. Higher tiers give the bots faster reactions, tighter aim, and more health, so the same arena can be a warm-up or a genuine grind depending on how you set it up.

✨ What makes it fun

🔫

Four Distinct Weapons

The Mash-ine Gun is a full-auto rifle with a 30-round mag for steady mid-range pressure. The Spudgun shotgun fires 7 pellets a shell — brutal up close, useless far away. The Tater Thumper sniper hits for 88 and near one-shots. The Fry-Day Launcher lobs splash rockets that punish clustered enemies.

🤖

Bots With Personalities

The AI isn't one behavior copy-pasted. Bots roll into rushers who charge you down, flankers who circle for angles, campers who hold long sightlines, and balanced all-rounders. They patrol waypoints, engage on line of sight, strafe, and retreat when their health drops low.

🎮

Five Game Modes

Fry For All free-for-all, Mash Match teams, Gun Game weapon ladder, Last Potato single-life elimination, and Spud Horde endless survival. Each one reframes the same arena into a different challenge, from frantic respawn deathmatch to hold-your-breath last-stand runs.

🗺️

The Mash Pit Arena

A single 42×42 map built for constant contact: solid outer walls, a central cross of two bars, four mid-lane cover blocks, and four corner bunkers. Sightlines are short enough to keep fights close and busy, with just enough cover to break a sniper's line.

💣

Grenades, Rockets & Pickups

You carry three grenades — press G to cook and throw one, with a 3-second fuse and a wide blast. Weapon pads respawn your loadout, and health pads restore 55 HP while armor pads grant a 75-point buffer that soaks damage until it's gone.

🏆

Feedback That Pops

A live kill feed, hit and kill markers, multi-kill banners (Double Spud, Triple Mash, Mash-acre, Spud God), screen shake, damage-direction arrows, a corner minimap, and a starch-splat when a spud goes down. Respawn with a brief spawn shield so you aren't instantly re-fried.

💡 Tips from the dev

Shots travel, so lead your target and pre-fire around corners. Against the sniper and rockets, keep moving — a strafe usually beats a standoff.
Grab an armor pad before you commit to a fight. That 75-point buffer effectively lets you eat a sniper round and live to answer it.
Use the rocket on grouped bots and doorways — the splash finishes what the direct hit starts. Save the sniper for the long central lanes.
Deny key pads. Even if you don't need the sniper, running over its pad puts it on cooldown so a bot can't grab it either.

🎯 The five game modes

🔫 Fry For All

The core free-for-all. Everyone is an enemy and you respawn three seconds after every death. First spud to 20 kills wins outright; if nobody gets there, the highest score when the 3-minute timer expires takes it. This is the fastest, loosest mode — pure aim, movement, and pad control.

🎯 Mash Match

Team deathmatch. One bot joins your blue team as a partner while the rest fight for red. Kills are pooled, so the first team to a combined 20 frags wins. Coordinating with your AI ally — and not standing in its rocket splash — is half the game here.

🔫 Gun Game

A weapon-ladder race. Every frag promotes you up a four-gun chain — rifle, shotgun, sniper, then rocket launcher — and your weapon is locked to your current rung, so pads are disabled. Complete the whole ladder to win. It forces you to be lethal with every tool, not just your favorite.

💀 Last Potato & 🌊 Spud Horde

Two single-life challenges. In Last Potato, downed bots stay down — be the last spud standing. In Spud Horde, red bots keep spawning in waves with no respawns for you, so it's a survival run measured by how long you last. In both, one death ends the match, which makes armor and cover survival tools, not luxuries.

❓ Frequently asked questions

Is Spud Shooters free?

Yes. It's free to play in the browser with no download, install, or account required. Click Launch Game and you're in the menu.

How do I win a match?

It depends on the mode. In Fry For All you win by reaching 20 kills first or leading when the 3-minute clock ends. Mash Match is the same target but pooled across your team. Gun Game is won by clearing the four-weapon ladder, Last Potato by being the final spud alive, and Spud Horde by surviving as long as you can.

How much health do I have?

You spawn with 160 health. Health pads on the map restore 55 per pickup, and armor pads add a separate 75-point buffer (max 75) that absorbs incoming damage. Armor is lost when you die, so spend it aggressively.

Can I change the difficulty?

Yes — the menu lets you set the opponent count to 2, 4, or 6 and pick Cadet, Soldier, or Veteran. Veteran bots react quicker, aim tighter, and carry more health. There's also an auto-fire toggle if you'd rather hold aim than click.

Do I need a mouse and keyboard?

This build is designed for desktop. It uses pointer-lock mouse aiming plus keyboard movement, so a mouse and keyboard give you the intended experience. Click the game area to lock your cursor before you start shooting.
